Thank you to the children and families of New Durham School! Our annual spring book fair was a hit and the proceeds have already started to benefit the students of our community. Several of our grades got to enjoy a special morning book fair event with their grandparents complete with snacks and a guest reader! It was a wonderful time enjoyed by all.
In preparation for the book fair I was able to make a short video to help excite the students to the "Dino" theme by utilizing an app for iPad. An iPad with an updated iOS system of 11or above is needed but the app is a minimal cost of $1.99 to download.
Dino Cube is an app that allows the user to film anywhere, inside or outside, while inserting one of their "dinosaurs" to share the screen. These videos can then be uploaded into a program like iMovie that can then be manipulated and edited to make a wonderful video, complete with dramatic music!
I was pleasantly surprised by my students reaction to the video during one of our weekly celebrations and it didn't even take a lot of time to create. So, check it out!
Well spring is right around the corner and I'm sure that most people are as excited as I am. Today's weather gave us a nice little reassurance after yesterday's storm that yes, it will arrive eventually!
I thought I would take this time to show a brief preview of some of the new books and media we have now in our media center. Most of these resources will be replacing the old VHS tapes we currently have in New Durham and bringing us up to speed with DVD resources instead!
Good afternoon Everyone! It's brisk outside but the sun is shining and the sky is blue. It's vacation and I hope everyone is out enjoying themselves and spending quality time with their loved ones.
I thought I would share an important update made on our symbaloo this week. If you aren't sure what a symbaloo is, ask your youngster they'll tell you. Remind them it's on our Library Media Center page and that should jog their memory if they've forgotten.
I have now added a link for Kiddle. Kiddle is a Google site that allows your child to make safe searches without worrying about inappropriate content popping up.
In a review by Common Sense Media, Kiddle received 3 out of 5 stars for appropriate use by students 8 years of age and up. There are some things to be aware of with this website.
It may allow for some scary content as well as advertisments however, this is out-weighed by the educational value and positive messaging children have access to. A safer alternative to using Google as a search engine, this will become a staple at NDS in the future.
Below is a link for you to check out the review from Common Sense Media as well as a link to Kiddle itself.
Ms. Nottage here. Well, it's been awhile since I've written so, here's an update as to what we're doing in New Durham. As always, the students and teachers are busy learning and teaching, old concepts and materials, as well as new!
In December our District Tech Integrator, Mr. Baroody came to spend a week with various classes showing them some of the new apps available and how to use them in the classroom.
Our second graders spent some time with him learning how to use Google Docs. They were also taught how to take a picture of themselves using their Chromebook camera and insert it. They were very excited!
Third graders spent time learning how to use the app Flipgrid a video conferencing app. Flipgrid allows the teacher to ask a question, or pose a problem, and the students to answer using audio and video through their device. Flipgrid then adds all students responses to a "grid." It's fun and engaging and gives all students a "voice" in their learning.
Some of the newer technologies being used throughout our district to help enhance lessons are apps like Thinglink and Explain Everything. These apps off our students various ways to present there work using audio, visual, sound effects, and other elements to create rich projects.
Another recommendation for student use is Anchor. A podcast and audio editing program that students will have a blast using and can even invite friends to make recordings with them.
A popular app that is being recommended for use is Adobe Scan. This app can use mobile technologies to scan documents and turn them into editable PDF's.
So check out some of these app's for yourself. Below are some links to videos that will show you just how they can be used.
